The Importance of Handwritten Letters
Hi there! My name is Jamie, and I'm a 4th grader at Oakwood Elementary School. Today, I want to talk to you about something that I think is really important - handwritten letters! I know, I know...you might be thinking \"Letters? What's the big deal? Nobody writes letters anymore with email and texting and all that.\" But I think handwritten letters are actually super cool and meaningful in their own special way.
Let me start by telling you about the first handwritten letter I ever got. It was from my grandma for my 7th birthday. When I opened up the envelope and saw that familiar cursive writing, it made me feel so warm and happy inside. My grandma lives pretty far away, so I don't get to see her that often. But holding that letter in my hands, it was like she was right there with me. I could practically hear her voice as I read the words she had taken the time to write out just for me. She told me how proud she was of me and how much she loved me. I must have read that letter a hundred times!
That's one of the coolest things about handwritten letters - they make you feel so special and appreciated. With an email or
text, you don't get that same personal touch. The sender just has to type some words and hit \"send.\" But with a letter, the person has to sit down with a pen and paper and consciously decide to take the time to write out their thoughts and feelings by hand, just for you. That's why getting a letter feels like getting a little gift!
I have a special box where I keep all the letters I've gotten over the years from family and friends. Whenever I'm feeling down or lonely, I'll pull them out and read through them again. The letters somehow make me feel more connected and loved, even if the person who wrote it lives far away. My letters are like little treasures that I can hold onto forever and ever. Another great thing about handwritten letters is the creativity and personality you can put into them. With a letter, you can doodle pictures in the margins, use different colored pens or pencils, make the lettering big or small or swirly. You can fold the paper in cool shapes or put stickers on the envelope. My friend Emma is a total artist, and she always decorates her letters with the most amazing drawings and designs. Getting a letter from her is like getting a little masterpiece! Try doing something like that with an email...not quite the same, is it?
I actually like to send handwritten letters as much as I like getting them. There's just something really satisfying about putting pen to paper and letting your thoughts flow out through your hand. It helps me slow down and be more mindful. When I'm typing an email or text, my mind is always racing ahead, trying to get my message out as quickly as possible. But with a letter, I can take my time and really think through what I want to say. The physical act of writing also helps me remember things better. If I mail a letter to my aunt telling her about my baseball games or my new puppy, those memories seem to stick in my brain more than if I had just typed them out.
That reminds me - do you remember back in 2nd grade when we were learning cursive writing? At first, I'll admit I thought it was pretty lame and old-fashioned. Why did we need to learn that squiggly style of writing when we could just print things out neatly? But once I started getting the hang of it, cursive actually became kind of fun and relaxing. Now when I get letters from older relatives written in cursive, I can appreciate how elegant and special it looks. Maybe someday I'll even write letters in cursive to my own future grandkids!
I could probably go on and on about why handwritten letters are the best, but I don't want to make this letter too long and
boring. I'll just say that in this age of emails, texts, DMs, and video calls, there's something wonderfully old-fashioned and meaningful about taking the time to sit down with a pen and paper. Writing letters connects us to people and memories in a way that modern technology just can't replicate. So next time you want to make someone feel really special, ditch the
keyboard and put pen to paper instead. Your handwritten letters will be little treasures for your loved ones to cherish forever. Okay, I should probably wrap this up and get back to my homework! Thanks for reading my thoughts on the importance of handwritten letters. Keep on writing! Your friend, Jamie
